Catahoula's Environmental Commitment

Our global responsibility to the environment is more important than ever right now. We’ve gotten some questions about how MCE Clean Energy works (pro-tip: you can sign up for your home!) and our (not-so-)new plastic bags, so thought it was a good time to go over some things.

PACKAGING
We recently updated our packaging to fit with the industry standard of 12oz plastic bags, though in our cafes and online we offer all of our coffees in the Naked Series Compostable Packaging! Just select “Bag Type: Naked” on the product page. The Naked Series bags are made of compostable paper and a plant-based liner. When you’ve finished your coffee and are ready to compost, remove the tin tie from the top of the bag and place the bag in your compost bin.

The reality of plastic bags is that they keep the coffee fresher, for longer. That’s why they’re the industry standard and that’s why many grocery stores prefer them — plastic eliminates worries of intense climate and moisture control. We agree that it simplifies many potential hiccups along the supply chain, although know that environmentally, it’s a huge bummer. We are exploring options that will allow customers to bring our plastic bags back to the cafe to recycle. Until then, it’s possible to buy these solutions for your home! Learn more here.

As you may know, we recently launched the "Can-a-houla:" coffee beans sold in a reusable, recyclable aluminum can. At this time this option is only available for our specialty coffees.

MCE CLEAN ENERGY
It is our duty as a business to make choices that are responsible to the world that we live in. We wanted all our power to come from 100% renewable sources so we partnered with MCE Clean Energy many years ago. We care about quality in everything, our beans, our roasters, our coffee drinks — and our power source is no different. Catahoula is proud to be among Richmond’s first Deep Green Champions!

OUR QUALITY + RESPONSIBLE PROMISE
To have superb coffee, you need both great beans and a great roaster. We source our beans from farmers around the world who have a commitment to responsible farming and their communities. This doesn’t always mean organic (see this post for more information on that), but always means quality beans and a low environmental impact! In this vein, in our cafes we use organic Clover milk and the very best almond, soy, and oat milk that we can find. And, our 35 kilo Loring Smart Roaster, which ensures that our beans are roasted to perfection, is powered by 100% renewable energy, thanks to MCE Clean Energy.
