How to compost your Catahoula Coffee bags

Hey there!
Looking to reduce your landfill contributions?
One step you can take is buying our coffee in the Naked Series (compostable bags!).
Keep reading to learn the proper way to dispose of our coffee bags.*

Step 1: Finish your coffee

We hope you enjoyed it! Now your bag is ready to be composted.

Step 3: Compost!

Our coffee bags are made of 40% recycled natural (unbleached) kraft paper and lined with a PLA liner. PLA is a biodegradable corn based film. It stands for polylactic acid and is a resin made from corn starch. It uses 65 percent less energy to produce than conventional oil-based plastics and generates 68 percent fewer greenhouse gasses and contains no toxins.

We recommend that you place the bag into your compost bin at this stage, however, you may also place it in the trash knowing that when it arrives to the landfill, it will soon biodegrade, leaving you with only the memory of your great caffeinated adventure.

Step 2: Remove Tin Tie

The tin tie is the metal strip at the top of your coffee bag that allows it to be resealed. The tin tie is an important feature because it helps keep the coffee fresh! The tin tie is easy to tear off, and can then be placed in the trash or reused.

Some re-use ideas include: keeping other bags sealed, organizing electronic wires, training plants in your garden, spicing up some arts and crafts, or as a nose wire to keep your masks fitted well. If you have an innovative reuse for your tin tie, let us know — we’ll feature you on our website and social media!

*At the moment we’re working to figure out the best way to dispose of our plastic packaging, which, as we’ve discussed in previous posts, is unideal for disposal, but preferable for freshness.
The best home option we’ve found is the TerraCycle Zero Waste Box - you can learn more here.
